Took part in the Russo-Japanese war, 1904-1905. Army commander during World War I. Joined the Red Army, 1918. Commander of the Northern front.
Editor of the historical-military commission on World War I. Involved in the preparation of basic military regulations for the Red Army, 1920. Wrote works on the history of World War I.
