Graduated as a mechanical engineer from the Leningrad Military Technical Institute, Naval Artillery Research Institute, 1934.
At the age of 19, joined the Communist Party. Worked as a fitter and machine operator in various plants in Gorkii and Ivanovo Oblast’s. Design engineer, chief designer, and director of the Bolshevik Arms Factory in Leningrad until 1941.
Was made people’s commissar of armaments at the age of 32. Responsible for armaments during World War II. In 1946, the post was changed to that of Minister of Armaments, a position he held until Stalin’s death in March 1953. Deputy in the USSR Supreme Soviet, 1946-1950 and 1954.
After World War II, played a decisive role in enlisting the knowledge of captured German scientists in building up the USSR’s rocket forces. A driving force behind the Soviet space programme. Full member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1952.
USSR Minister of the Defence Industry, 1953-1957. Deputy Chairman, and 1st Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers, 1963-1965. Candidate member, 1965-1976, and full member of the Politburo from 1976.
A civilian until his appointment in April 1976. Promoted to Marshal 3 months later. USSR Minister of Defence, 1976-December 1984.
