1912-1914 studied at Philological Faculty, Moscow University. 1922 graduate Social Sciences Faculty, Moscow University.
At the start of World War 1 volunteered as male nurse In summer 1917 member, then deputy chairman, Ivanovo Soviet of Workers, Peasants and Soldiers’ Deputy. During 1917 October Revol chairman, Revol staff, and from early 1918 member, Ivanovo-Voznesensk Province Executive Committee.
Maintained close ties with local Socialist-Revol Party group and local anarchists group. Summer 1918 broke with these parties, joined Communist Party and helped crush Yaroslavl’ mutiny. Late 1918 elected secretary, IvanovoVoznesensk Province Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) Committee.
Early 1919 comissar, 25th Chapayev Division. Then head, Polit Board, Turkestani Front, Kuban’ Army. Wounded in action; 1921, after his discharge from the army, went to Moscow and began lit work.
Worked for State Publ House and Press Department, Central Committee, Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks). From 1923 secretary, Moscow Writers’ Organisation First verse published 1912, first prose work 1916.
