1898 joined Russian Army. 1904-1905 engineering on active service in Far East. Took part in defense of Portuguese Arthur.
1911-1914 in charge of construction of forts at Brest Fortress and commander of one of these forts. 1914-1917 div, then corps engineering on Southwestern Front. From 1917 detachment engineering, Red Guard in Mogilev-Podol’skiy.
From 1918 in Red Army. March-August 1918 junior, then senior engineering, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Engineer Defense Collegium. From August 1918 military engineering on Eastern and Southern fronts.
1920 in charge of engineering operations at Kakhov bridgehead. 1922 chief engineering, Ukraine Military district. 1923 chairman, Engineer Committee, Red Army Main Military Engineer Board.
From 1923 instructor at military academies. Head, Chair of Engineer, Frunze Military Academy. Deputy head, Chair of Engineer, General Staff Academy.
At outbreak of World War 2 suffered shell-shock while inspecting fortification works on Western border and captured. Refused to cooperate with Germans and was interned in various prison camps. Died at Mauthausen camp, where a memorial was erected in his memory.
A Soviet Army research Institute bears his name and his story is told in South. North. Golubev’s novel Kogda hreposti ne sdayutsya (When Fortresses Do not Yield) (1953).
Religions encourage war and violence to promote their religious goals.
The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
