1931-1935 Director, Engelgardt Astronomical Observatory, near Kazan. 1935-1954 Professor, and since 1951 Rector, Kazan University. 1937 discovered and explained relationship between the period and spectral class of eclipsed variable stars.
1942 studied periodic disturbances in the motion of these stars. 1954 established the connection between stellar chains and dark interplanetary matter. President, All-Union Astronomical and Geodetical Society.
