Until 1898 associ professor, then professor, Saint St. Petersburg University. Taught Chinese history and economics geography of the Eastern countries. 1900-1903 in china; made economics study of Chinese port trade.
Published reminiscences of Boxer Revolt. 1905-1906 director, Oriental Institute, Vladivostok. 1906-1910 in Japan; compiled Russia's First Japanese-Russian hieroglyphic dictionary.
Returned to Russia and helped found Practical Oriental Academy in Saint St. Petersburg. 1917-1937 taught Japanese history and economics at Leningrad University’s Oriental Institute and Moscow’s Frunze Military Academy. Wrote numerous textbooks and guides to Japanese language.
