1895—1913 taught at Moscow high-schools. 1909-1919 taught at Higher Women's Courses. After 1917 October Revol taught at Prechistenskiy Courses and Higher Military Teachers’ Training School.
In 1920's and 1930's taught at Bryusov Higher Institute of Literature and Arts, State Institute of Speech, and Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History, et cetera 1907-1942 professor, Moscow University. 1915-1931 chairman, Moscow Dialectological Commission, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Member, Academy Commission for Preparing 1917 Reform of Russian Orthography. Wrote numerous research and educational works on general linguistics, history of Russian language, lexicography, dialectology, orthography and orthoepy. In the field of general linguistics and Russian grammar popularized ideas of his teacher, F. F. Fortunatov.
One of the founders of Russian orthoepy. His works on Russian dialectology (in coauthorship with North. North. Durnovo and North. North. Sokolov) played an important part in its development. Campaigned for systematic improvement in speech standards and literacy of general public.
Helped compile curricula and Russian language textbooks for elementary, secondary and higher schools. Coauthor, Orfograficheskiy slovar (Orthographic Dictionary) for schools. Wrote teachers’ manuals.
Correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1939.
