When a boy he learned Confucian literature from Banri Hoashi and later was trained by Priest Taisetsu of the Shokoku ji Temple. Endeavored to counter the anti-Buddhist movement which followed the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
He was appointed vice-president of the Daikyoin, a Buddhist school which was established early in the Meiji Era, and head priest of the Rinzai Sect. Dokuon Ogino was chief priest of the Shokokuji Temple. Built the Kojirin (Zentraining hall) in his temple for the benefit of his many followers.
