Dokutan Toyoda was born in 1840 in Mino, Gifu, Japan.
Dokutan Toyoda studied the tenets of the Rinzai Sect under Shunso at Tokoji Temple Mino (1848), and later made an extensive tour of Kyushu and Aichi Prefecture seeking enlightenment from priests and sages there.
Dokutan Toyoda succeeded Tankai as priest of Eihoji Temple (1890), joined the Nanzenji temple at Kyoto and reconstructed its main hall (1896) and subsequently was appomted Chief Pnest of Myoshinji Temple, Kyoto (1909).
