12 WALTZES FOR DOUBLE BASS SOLO DOUBLE BASS SOLO Series: Henle Music Folios Publisher: Henle Urtext Edition Medium: Softcover Composer: Domenico Dragonetti Editor: Tobias Glöcker We have uncovered a true delight for double bass players: a collection of twelve stylized waltzes by Beethoven's contemporary Domenico Dragonetti. The "Paganini of the double bass" grew up in Venice, but moved to London as an adult. It is there that he probably wrote the twelve waltzes. They are quite likely the earliest surviving works for double bass solo. These charming pieces have until now not been published in their entirety. Despite their virtuosic impression, the technical hurdles can be comfortably mastered; the pieces are therefore not only suited for the concert hall but are also perfect encores. This quality Urtext edition is thus able to fill a true gap in the repertoire. Inventory # HL 51480847 UPC: 884088179199 Edition Number: HN847 Width: 9.25 Length: 12.25 Pages: 20

Domenico Carlo Maria Dragonetti was born on April 7, 1763 in Venice, Italy, the son of Pietro Dragonetti, a poor barber.
Dragonetti received violin instruction from a local shoemaker, who later persuaded him to take up the double bass.
At the age of just 13 Dragonetti was appointed to the orchestra of the Opera Buffa in Venice before joining the orchestra of the Chapel of San Marco five years later. During these years, he discovered the famous Gasparo da Salò bass, an instrument that he would play for the rest of his life. He was gifted his precious 3-stringed bass instrument by the Benedictine nuns of St. Peter’s Monastery in Venice, who wanted to entice him to continue in residence there directing the Opera Buffa Orchestra.
In 1794, Dragonetti moved to London where he was to play operas and concerts at the King's Theatre. Over the course of his career Domencio went onto play before the Emperor Napoleon at the palace of Prince Staremberg, perform with Paganini and met Haydn, Beethoven and many other great composers. He continued to give major concerts throughout the final years of his life, including as the principal bassist at the Beethoven Festival in Bonn in 1845, only a year before he passed away.
