Brink was born on November 5, 1948 in Hayward, California, United States; the son of Donald Eben Brink and Lorraine (Hafner) Brink.
Brink received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the University of California in 1971. Ten years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Plant Biology from the University of Illinois.
Brink began his career as a postdoctoral research fellow of the department of agronomy at the University of Illinois in 1981. Three years later he took a position of an academic coordinator at Standard Oil-University of Illinois Center. Since 1985 Donald was appointed a project leader at BP American Research (nowadays BP America, Inc.). Also since 1986 he has been an adjunct faculty at Case Western Reserve University.
In 1986, Donald Brink married Jennifer Ann Woods. They have four children.
