He held an Master of Arts degree in Art from the University of California, Los Los Angeles Covington was an enthusiast of the San Diego North Park neighborhood—as well as a leading expert on the architect David Owen Dryden. Covington was a proponent of the foundation of the Dryden Historic District.
A member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Interior Design, he conducted research in the history of architecture, and the decorative arts From 1991 to 2002, Covington was a volunteer member of the Friends of the Marston House, a San Diego Historical Society museum of the Arts and Crafts.
