Prior to taking up writing, Donald Harstad had a 26-year career with the Sheriff's Department of Clayton County, Iowa, retiring as a Deputy Sheriff. His first novel was Eleven Days. In the book Harstad makes use of his law enforcement background and the technicalities from a case he worked on to weave his plot. A Publishers Weekly reviewer praised the book, commenting on the author’s “deceptively sparse style” which won out even when Harstad “crowded the plot” with too many details.
Harstad lives in Elkader, Iowa.
