Privately; Gainford Academy, Company Durham. On leaving school entered father’s office and learnt the profession of land agent and surveyor, and became assistant. On father’s death succeeded him as agent on the Loftus agricultural and mineral estates, and also practised as general surveyor and valuer.
Appointed by the late Duke of Sutherland to the factorship of the Earldom of Sutherland, 1885. Was also given charge of the west coast of the Sutherland estates, including the two large parishes of Assynt and Eddracliilles. Elected a Fellow of the Surveyors’ Institution, 1889.
A County Councillor, and was for some time Convener. Chairman of the County Road Board and of the Standing Joint Committee and Executive Committee. Chairman of the Parish Council and School Board of Golspie.
A Governor and Treasurer of the Sutherland Technical School. D.L., Justice of the Peace, Sutherland; Agent or Factor to the Duke of Sutherland.
