Mallick attended Penn State University for college, and served in the United States Navy Reserves, and in 1957 he graduated from the University of Florida with his master"s degree in engineering.

He later became the Deputy Chief for the Dryden Aircraft Operations Division. Mallick served the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics as a test pilot from 1957–1963. In 1963 he became a pilot at the Dryden Flight Research Center, and in 1967 he was promoted to Chief Pilot.
While there he was a project pilot on both the YF-12 and XB-70A research programs.
