Donald Patrick Murray was born on July 31, 1929, in Hollywood, California, United States. He is the only child of Dennis Aloisius Murray, a Broadway dance director and stage manager, and Ethel (Cook) Murray, a former Ziegfeld performer.

Murray attended East Rockaway High School in East Rockaway in New York, and then, received his education at American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Murray made his debut as an actor in the 1951 play The Rose Tattoo, as Jack Hunter.
During the Korean War Murray was assigned to alternative service in Europe, helping orphans and war casualties.
In 1954, he returned from Europe to America and to acting. Two years later he made his film debut as Beauregard "Bo" Decker in Bus Stop. Other famous films of his include A Hatful of Rain (1957), Shake Hands with the Devil (1959), One Foot in Hell (1960), The Hoodlum Priest (1961), Advise & Consent (1962), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972), Deadly Hero (1975) and Peggy Sue Got Married (1986). His more recent works include two roles in films The Hard Ride and Twin Peaks of 2017.
In addition to acting, Murray directed a film based on the book The Cross and the Switchblade (1970). He was also a producer and director of the film Damien, 1976; and producer of Annie’s Coming Out (also known as Test of Love) in 1985.
During his long acting career Don Murray also made a number of television appearances, including TV series and shows.
Don Murray was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the 1956 film, Bus Stop. He received additional recognition for his roles in The Hoodlum Priest and The Cross and the Switchblade.
In July 2014, there was a retrospective of Murray's films held at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco.
Murray had two children, Christopher and Patricia, with his first wife, Bus Stop co-star Hope Lange, and three children, Coleen, Sean, and Michael, with his second wife, Bettie Johnson.
