Pickering had appeared in many television, film and radio roles. His television appearances include several roles in Doctor Who (The Keys of Marinus, 1964. The Faceless Ones, 1967.

In the 26-part British Broadcasting Corporation seriesThe Pallisers, he played Dolly Longstaffe. He also played roles in The House of Eliott, Watson in the 1980 series Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, Yes, Prime Minister, Brittas Empire and Executive Stress.
