Chairman of the Select Committee on Scottish Affairs, 1979-1981. Opposition Front Bench Spokesman on Scottish Affairs, 1981-1992. Spokesman on Social Security, since 1992, member of Shadow Cabinet, since 1984.

Shadow Secretary of State, Social Security, since 1992.
