Preface to First Edition: The period covered by this volume is but a moment of history. But it is a crowded moment, one vibrant with events. The old assertion that "there is nothing new under the sun" certainly not not apply literally to it. Even the most pessimistic must admit that is produced new things, some of which are so revolutionary as to transform the face of Europe. Many of the events and their causes are so complex, so intricate as to tac the most acute understanding. No historian dealing with the last century and a half will come away with the feeling that he has rendered it justice. I hope, however, that this volume will make some contribution to an understanding of the period. Preface to Second Edition: The years since the first edition of this book appeared have witnessed rapid changes in the international scene. These changes affected every phase of human life and activity. The resulting gap between the present and the point at which the narrative of the first edition ended has been filled by Professor Rohr's chapters. The new chapters carry the narrative through the year 1960. Preface to Third Edition: In this Third Edition an account of events since 1960 has been added and the bibliography has been updated.
