Donald M. Stewart

Background

Stewart was born on July 8, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Education

Stewart studied at Hyde Park High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College in 1959. Ten years later he received a Master of Public Administration degree from John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University.

Also in 1972, Donald was given a Master of Arts degee in political science from Yale University. In 1975, he was given a Doctor of Public Administration degree from the same school. Stewart also completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1983.

Career

Stewart began his career as an associate dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. He also was a director of the College of General Studies and counselor to the provost at that university. Donald worked in the Overseas Development Division of the Ford Foundation in Nigeria, Egypt and Tunisia from 1962 to 1969.

In 1976, he was appointed a president of Spelman College. Eleven years later Stewart took a position of a president and chief executive officer of the College Board in New York. In 1999, he became a senior program officer at Carnegie Corporation and had held the position for a year.

In addition, Donald served as a director at The New York Times Company in 1986-2005 and Campbell Soup Company in 1992-2005. In 2000, he held the position of a chief executive officer and president at Chicago Community Trust. Five years later Stewart became a visiting professor at the University of Chicago`s Harris School of Public Policy Studies, where he worked until 2011.

He served as a visiting professor in the University of Chicago`s Harris School of Public Policy Studies. Donald was a director of product development at Zero Wait-State, Inc. He was also a member of the board of The New York Times Company, Principal Financial Group and Principal Life.

Achievements

• Stewart ushered in many additions to the Spelman College's curriculum and expanded the academic offerings with new majors, minors and the creation of new programs.

Stewart is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
