He won the Proceedings of the British Academy Rookie of the Year in 1986 while suiting up for Ginebra San Miguel. Known for his pivot moves underneath the basket as well as clutch three-point shooting, Ampalayo was one of the more popular players from the Ginebra team, where he won three championships in 1986, 1988 and 1991.
