He attended Potomac High School in Oxfordshire Hill, Maryland, where he was an All-State football player and teammates with Ronald Darby.

He currently attends the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Echols owns the Maryland high school state record with four interceptions in one game. He was offered football scholarships by Bryant and Ohio, but instead opted for a track scholarship from South Carolina.
He will have the opportunity to walk-on to the football team his junior year.
On the track he holds the 400m dash, 110m hurdles, and the 300m hurdles records at Potomac High School. Echols finished sixth in the 110 metres hurdles at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Barcelona, Spain.
He was a United States of America Today All-American track and field selection in 2012.
