Donna Leahy was born on May 15, 1961.
Donna Leahy graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Temple University.
In her life before innkeeping, Donna Leahy was a self-employed video producer whose hobby was tending to a bed and breakfast on the coast of Maine. But that was just practice. When she and husband Robert decided to find an inn they could also call home, they traveled west and found just that, in a small town outside Philadelphia called Churchtown. The Leahys owned and operated the Inn at Twin Linden, an establishment known for its luxurious yet homey atmosphere, friendly owners, and delicious fine food.
Leahy's experience at the Inn was the catalyst for the writing and publishing of her cookbooks. The first, Morning Glories: Recipes for Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond from an American Inn, was published in 1996. That was followed closely by Wisdom of the Plain Folk: Songs and Prayers from Amish and Mennonites. The book was inspired by the culture which surrounds Leahy. Churchtown is located in Lancaster County, the heart of Pennsylvania Amish country.
Her third book, Recipe for a Country Inn: Fine Food from the Inn at Twin Linden, is the culmination of years of adventurous cooking. The book contains 125 recipes as well as an informal behind-the-scenes look at the history and day-to-day running of the inn. In an interview with Barbara Hough Roda of the Lancaster Sunday News, Leahy explained that this most recent venture into publishing is her life story. With no formal culinary training or experience. Leahy armed herself with food magazines and cookbooks and set to work, learning by doing, undoing, and overdoing. "I start out with really good ingredients and high quality. I try to get the best of everything," she told Roda. Dishes served at the inn and presented in Recipe for a Country' Inn take diners from morning to night. The dishes are simple, yet elegant, designed to make people feel special. Photographs enhance the book's appeal, thanks to Leahy's husband. Although Robert Leahy doesn't photograph food, his slices-of-life from the nearby countryside and portraits of Amish folk give Recipe for a Country Inn a personal touch that was acknowledged by critics. More than a mere cookbook, Recipe for a Country Inn is riddled with sidebars and mini-essays that address issues pertinent to running a successful inn. These "Notes from the Inn" include essays such as "The Difficult Guest" and "Rising with the Chickens." Readers are taken into the confidences of these innkeepers and learn not only the highlights of the lifestyle but also the challenges that confront them on a daily basis. Leahy explained this approach on the HarperCollins Web site: "I felt that sharing my personal view of innkeeping is the best way to have my reader share the experience. I want the readers to feel as if they are living through the process of opening the inn with me and learn first-hand what my life as an innkeeper is like - I want them to feel they are part of the moment."
Leahy has appeared on CBS and NBC morning talk shows, where she used her recipes to delight staffers and hosts alike. Leahy was also featured in a James Beard Foundation cooking series on country inn chefs held in New York.
In 1995-1996, Donna Leahy was a Rizzoli International Publications author; in 1996-1997 - Penguin Group USA; and in 2001-2002 - HarperCollins Publishers. She is a co-founder of Schnauzer Rescue of the Mid-Atlantic, Inc., a rescue organization that has saved and placed 1,000's dogs in need, where she worked in 2000-2005. In 2017, she became a Wine Director of Three60 Market LLC.
Donna Leahy is the former chef and owner of a fine dining restaurant and one of the top 10 country inns in the country. She has appeared on the Today Show, CBS Early Show, and the Food Network. She was described as the "best self-taught chef I've seen" by a reviewer at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Leahy was also featured in a James Beard Foundation cooking series on country inn chefs held in New York.
