Career
Doris Cellar was the front woman in the band the Freelance Whales who gained popularity in 2010 when Twitter selected Freelance Whales" music as the background for a video introducing a major rework of the service"s user experience. This was followed by dozens of television commercials and syncs, and the band toured extensively, touring all major festivals both internationally and nationally. In 2011 Cellar created and wrote an animal rights video for Peta and in 2012, Cellar wrote and sang lead for their sophomore single "Spitting image", which was featured on Music Television as well The Inbetweeners of episode 10 The Dance.
One reviewer said her vocals were "almost sweet enough to make us skip down the halls" while another mentioned them as an example of why the band "may red-line the Cute-O-Meter".
Reviewing a live concert by the band in September 2011, a Chicago writer observed that while everyone in the band was a versatile multi-instrumentalist, she was "key" in live performance. Cellar wrote and self produced two music videos for her new music: Big Kiss" and Inside Your Groove.
Which was inspired by the break up. Cellar continues to be part of Nina Sky"s live performances and is set to hit the road with them as soon as their record is released in 2015.
She can be seen playing shows in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens, and according to her twitter and instagram continues to write and record music at her home studio.
Cellar is unusually versatile. She can switch musically between guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, harmonica, percussion, harmonium, banjo, slide guitar, twelve-string guitar, glockenspiel, kalimba, and melodica. She produces all her own beats and performs without a backing band electronically.
