Dorothy Barresi was born on November 13, 1957 in Buffalo, New York; the daughter of Charles Maggio, a sociologist and ethno-gerontologist, and Mary Barresi, a homemaker and volunteer.
Dorothy Barresi graduated from St. Vincent – St. Mary High School in 1975.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Akron in 1979. Two years later she was given a Master of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1985 Dorothy was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree by the University of Massachusetts.
Dorothy Barresi began her career in 1988. Since then she has worked as a professor of English and a director of the creative writing option at California State University—Northridge. From 1994 to 1997 and in 2001 she worked as a judge of Los Angeles Times Book Award in Poetry and a distinguished judge for the Bordgheria Prize in Poetry in 2001 and 2002.
She is the author of What We Did While We Made More Guns, American Fanatics, Rouge Pulp and Post-Rapture Diner.
Her work has appeared in Antioch Review, AGNI, Gettysburg Review, Harvard Review, Indiana Review, Kenyon Review, Mid-American Review, Parnassus, POETRY, Pool, Ploughshares, Virginia Quarterly Review, Triquarterly and Southern Review.
Dorothy is also a contributor of poetry, essays, and reviews to numerous periodicals, including Bakunin, Parnassus, Poetry, Ploughshares, Gettysburg Review, Antioch Review, and Harvard Review.
