This is the first-ever pictorial history of Indiana University. It covers the entire span of the University's life, from its founding in 1820 to the present. There is ample coverage of the regional campuses, Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis, and Bloomington. This book has been years in the preparation, and every effort has been made to find interesting photographs or other representational materials from every era of the University's life. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If that is so, this volume is the equivalent of some 400,000 words. How we were, how we thought, what we believed 150 or 100 years ago, or even in the 1950s, are parts of an ever-elusive and changing tapestry called the past. Each image reveals something new or something forgotten, and what we think we see today is surely different from what was seen then, or what was intended. How people dressed, held themselves for portraits, designed their buildings, conducted ceremonies, played games, went to class - all are revealing and fascinating, windows on the past, and on ourselves. This lavish book, which includes 64 pages of full-color images, is a treasure trove of the University's past as well as a celebration of the contemporary scene. In addition to the pictures, a concise introduction presents an outline of the University's history; detailed captions bring further information and insights to the story.
