Douglas Hamilton Erwin was born on March 27, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, United States. He is the son of John D. and Ann Erwin.
Erwin graduated from Colgate University with a bachelor's degree in 1980 and received his doctorate from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1985.
Erwin started his career as an assistant professor at Michigan State University at East Lansing in 1985, and after five years of serving, he was promoted to an associate professor of geology.
Since 1990, Erwin has been working at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, where he currently holds the position of Curator of Paleozoic Invertebrates. From 2002 to 2013, Erwin also served as a chair of the faculty at the Santa Fe Institute.
Erwin is a member of the International Paleontological Association, Paleontological Society, Society for the Study of Evolution, Society for Systematic Zoology, Geological Society of America, Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Hennig Society, and Palaeontological Association.
Erwin married Cheryl L. Adams on May 1, 1993. The couple has no children.
