Douglas Goldhamer was born on May 1, 1945, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is a son of Harry and Jean Goldhamer.
In 1966 Douglas Goldhamer received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sir George Williams College (was merged with Loyola College to create Concordia University). He received his Bachelor of Hebrew Law, Master of Hebrew Letters and Doctor of Divinity degrees from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. Goldhamer's Doctor of Philosophy in Medieval Philosophy is from the University of Chicago.
In 1967 Douglas Goldhamer was a student rabbi for Jewish congregations in Petoskey, Michigan, and Alpena, Michigan, from 1968 to 1969. He was a student rabbi at Hebrew Association for the Deaf from 1970 to 1972. In the beginning of 1972 Douglas was a rabbi at Congregation Bene Shalom in Skokie, Illinois. From 1973 to 1976 he was a newscaster for the deaf at the National Broadcasting Co.
In 1990 Goldhamer served as an associate professor at Gallaudett University. In 1992 he was a founder and president at the Hebrew Seminary of the Deaf in Skokie, Illinois. In 1992 Douglas was an artist and art show participant at Judy Saslow Gallery, Chicago, Illinois. In 1997 he was an artist and exhibitor at the National Jewish Museum of Art, Washington, D.C.
