Douglas Niles was born on December 1, 1954, Brookfield, Wisconsin, United States.
Douglas Niles spent the first twelve years of his life in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Then, his family relocated to Nashotah.
Fascinated by heroic fantasy and wargaming, Niles created his first short stories and short films while in a high school.
He then studied at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh having speech and English as his major and minor respectively.
Douglas Niles started his career at Clinton High School, Wisconsin where he taught Speech and English till 1982 when he came back to his teenage passion by wargaming and decided to take his chance with TSR game publishing company. First applying as an editor, he was finally hired as a game designer.
The game-design projects for role-playing and military simulation games realized by Niles at TSR included the design for World War II: European Theatre of Operations strategic game, modules for the Dungeons & Dragons game, Dragonlance modules, and one of Indiana Jones modules among others.
In the middle of the 1980s, Niles became a published author turning his attention to the writing of gamebooks for the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and Super Endless Quest series. He also penned a 1985 volume in the Tarzan series, Tarzan and the Well of Slaves. An early work that established Niles as an authority in the field of fantasy games was Dungeoneer's Survival Guide: A Sourcebook for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Game Adventures in the Unknown Depths of Underdark!, a 1986 hardback supplement to the rules of the popular role-playing game.
After that nonfiction volume, Niles began writing fantasy novels. These generally came in the form of trilogies, many appearing under the umbrella title Forgotten Realms Fantasy Adventure. The Forgotten Realms novels, which began emerging in 1986, take place in a fantasy game world. Niles's first set of books, the Moonshae Trilogy, consisted of the novels Darkwalker on Moonshae, Black Wizards, and Darkwell. In 1990, Douglas Niles left TSR to devote his full time to writing.
After the Moonshae Trilogy, came a second Forgotten Realms fantasy series, the Maztica Trilogy, consisting of Ironhelm, Viperhand, and Feathered Dragon. The third trilogy in Niles's sequence, the Druidhome novels, began with the Prophet of Moonshae in 1992. Three years later, Niles issued the first volume in a new series, the Watershed Trilogy. Titled A Breach in the Watershed, this fantasy takes place among three imaginary lands which are protected by a supposedly invulnerable Watershed.
Niles applied the experience that he received designing military games in two alternate history novels, Fox on the Rhine and Fox at the Front, written in collaboration with a game designer Michael Dobson in the early 2000s. Further writings of Niles included other Dragonlance novels with the latest Fate of Thorbardin published in 2009, one more collaboration with Michael Dobson, MacArthur's War: A Novel of the Invasion of Japan, and a number of other publications, including a 2015 non-fiction work A Noble Cause: American Battlefield Victories in Vietnam.
In addition to the fame-designs produced for TSR, Douglas Niles has also worked on several Simulation Publications projects, including a couple of board games after Tom Clancy’s novels The Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising.

2007Quotations: "The whole concept of Dragonlance really changed the nature of gaming and as I am a big fan of epic fantasy, it was a marvelous way to incorporate that flavor into a game."
Douglas Nilles likes to spend time with family and to interact with his friends.
Douglas Niles met his future wife, Christine Niles, while studying at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The Niles family produced two children named David and Allison. Allison was a participant of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
