Douglas Severson earned a Master of Science in Photography from the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago (1977). In 1980 he was a Master of Fine Arts in Museum Practice at Rochester Institute of Technology, New York.
In 1979 Douglas Severson worked as an intern in the Conservation Department at George Eastman House in Rochester and as a research assistant to James Reilly at Rochester Institute of Technology on a project to study the deterioration of albumen prints. He was an assistant in the Photography Department at the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, in 1978-1979. His research focuses on the conservation of albumen and salted paper prints.
