From assistant professor to professor University New Hampshire, Durham, 1965—2002, chair department history, 1971—1974, Prince Henry the Navigator professor of Portuguese History and the Discoveries, 1995—2002, professor history emeritus, since 2002. Visiting assistant professor University College Rhodesia, Salisbury, Richard Welch Memorial fellow in Advanced Research Intelligence, Harvard University, Cambridge, 1984-1985.
