Career
Left England with parents for South Australia, 1850. Returned to relatives in Liverpool, 1854. After leaving school was for a short time in the service, ashore and afloat, of Balfour, Williamson & Company, Liverpool.
Left England for Melbourne, Australia, and there entered mercantile pursuits, 1867. Removed to Sydney, New South Wales, opening as managing partner business for a firm of manufacturers and importers, 1877. Retired from the firm, 1892.
Member for Warringah, New South Wales Legislative Assembly, 1894. Honorary Treasurer and one of the platform speakers of the Federal Association until the accomplishment of Australian union. Member for North Sydney, Federal House of Representatives, 1900,1903, and 1906.
Commonwealth Minister for Home Affairs, 1904-1905. A Representative of the Commonwealth at the Imperial Conference on Merchant Shipping Legislation, London, 1907. Member of the House of Representatives, Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia.
