Dumitru Ghiatza was born on September 22, 1888 in Colibasi, Giurgiu, Romania.
Dumitru Ghiaţă received a scholarship in 1913-1914 in Paris where he attended the Académie Ranson and the Delecluze Academy.
Dumitru Ghiatza painted still life depictions of flowers and compositions in a simple, direct, sober coloured style, in a synthetic drawing recalling folk traditions: "Peasants at the Fair", "Winter at Târgoviște", "Autumn in the Woods".
Dumitru Ghiatza died on July 3, 1972 in Bucharest, Romania.
Dumitru Ghiatza received the State Prize of the Romanian People's Republic in 1962.
By Decree no. 3 of January 13, 1964 of the State Council of the Romanian People's Republic (now Romania), Dumitru Ghiaţă was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Romanian People's Republic "for outstanding achievements in work in the field of theater, music and fine arts".
Besides, on May 4, 1971, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Romanian Communist Party, Ghiatza was decorated with the title of Hero of Socialist Labor for outstanding achievements in science, art and culture and with the gold medal "The Sickle and the Hammer" for special merits in the field of science, art and culture.
