This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

In making the statistical and analytical study of the -cases the work also increased in size. And it was difficult to exclude matter which had been most interesting and instructive, and which served to impress the points pre sented, even at the risk of burdening the pages with many figures.

Dr. Lucius Duncan Bulkley was an American physician. He is regarded for his published books and journal articles, for the establishment of a free clinic, and for founding a special society and a quarterly journal, "Cancer".
Background
Lucius Duncan Bulkley was born on January 12, 1845 in New York City, the son of Henry D. and Juliana (Barnes) Bulkley. His father was a prominent general practitioner with a special interest in skin diseases, and his own career was largely a continuation of his father's dermatological activity.
Education
Having graduated in arts at Yale in 1866 and in medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1869, Lucius studied dermatology in Europe under such masters as Von Hebra and Neumann of Vienna, and Hardy of Paris, and in 1872 settled in his native city with the aim of limiting his practise to dermatology.
Career
After his father's death, aided by the professional support of the latter's friends, Bulkley soon laid the foundations of a large and select practise. In the conviction, however, that a practise cannot be self-perpetuating but requires incessant publicity to thrive, he plunged into many professional activities beginning with a translation of Isidor Neumann's Lehrbuch der Hautkrankheiten (1872), which he had begun while in Vienna.
With others he organized the clinical activity of the Demilt Dispensary into a teaching force and thus laid the foundation for systematic post-graduate teaching which culminated in the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and the New York Polyclinic.
Beginning in 1877, he gave free courses of instruction in dermatology at the New York Hospital, later transferred to the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital which he founded in 1882. He traveled much in the interest of his special work, attending many congresses both in this country and Europe and studying exotic diseases in their habitat, and he accumulated an unrivaled collection of books, pamphlets, plates, models, etc. , pertaining to his special work.
On retiring from dermatological activity he astonished the profession by coming out for the non-surgical treatment of cancer, at first with reservations but eventually limiting it to diet, hygiene, and drugs.
The reaction of the profession was on the whole very unfavorable, his motives were impugned, and he was forced to sever some of his society and hospital affiliations. But his motives were certainly not mercenary, for he was worth a large fortune and his crusade cost him thousands of dollars.
He did not abandon his work until blinded by double cataract's and did not long survive his enforced rest. Eczema (1882, 3rd edition, 1901); Acne (1885); Manual of Diseases of the Skin (1882, 6th edition, 1912); Syphilis in the Innocent (1894), the Alvarenga Prize Essay; are the best-known of his writings, but he published a number of smaller works on dermatology and several volumes on the medical treatment of cancer which were not convincing to the profession: Cancer, its Cause and Treatment (2 vols. , 1915 - 17); Cancer and Its Non-Surgical Treatment (1921; a second edition in press at the time of his death); and Cancer of the Breast (1924).
Achievements
Lucius Bulkley founded (1874) and for eight years edited the Archives of Dermatology and was throughout his career a contributor to medical journal literature, and published many text-books. He took an active part in the work of the new at this time local and national dermatological societies, but as his aggressiveness made enemies he failed in two of his aims, --the presidency of the American Dermatological Association and the chair of dermatology in his alma mater.
He also served as a professor of dermatology in the Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital, was from 1887 to 1900 chairman of the section on dermatology of the American Medical Association, and in 1897 was president of the American Academy of Medicine.
(Originally published in 1919. This volume from the Cornel...)
Views
Bulkley had an instinctive horror of the knife (never forgetting the death of his father from incision of a carbuncle, now regarded as bad surgery); he was a religious mystic who believed that his life had often been spared for some special end which might well have been the conquest of cancer; he loved controversy, especially when on the weak side; and he needed an outlet for his energies, old as he then was.
Membership
He was a member of the American Dermatological Association and of the American Medical Association.
Personality
His mentality was highly extroverted and he was unequal to reflection and self-criticism; but, while he often blundered, he usually won his case by sheer energy and persistence.
Connections
On May 28, 1872, Bulkley was married to Katherine La Rue Mellick.
