(This book provides the first truly comprehensive study of...)
This book provides the first truly comprehensive study of damage mechanics. All concepts are carefully identified and defined in micro- and macroscopic scales. In terms of the methods and observation scales, the main part of the book is divided into three chapters. These chapters consider the stochastic models applied to atomistic scale, micromechanical models (for arbitary concentrations of defects) on microscopic scale and continuum models on the macroscopic scale. It is intended for people who are doing or planning to do research in the mechanics and material science aspects of brittle deformation of solids with heterogeneous microstructure.

Bachelor of Science, Belgrade University, Yugoslavia, 1958. Master of Science, Belgrade University, Yugoslavia, 1966. Doctor of Philosophy, Northwestern University, 1968.
He was past member and chair of the Applied Mechanics Division of American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He served a term on the United States National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He authored a review paper on damage mechanics that predates his book on the same subject. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Belgrade (1958, 1966) before emigrating to the United States. He worked at Ingersoll Rand Research Incorporated.
(1969) and Argonne National Laboratory (1973), before becoming Professor of Civil Engineering at University of Illinois, Chicago, Illinois (1973-1989) and then Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Arizona State University (Arizona State University), until retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2004. he served on the editorial boards of Applied Mechanics Reviews and Mechanics of Materials, and was editor of the International Journal of Damage Mechanics.
