Coleman was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 28th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft out of Wichita State. He signed with the Kansas City Royals before the 2015 season. Coleman was called up to the majors for the first time on July 3, 2015.
He was designated for assignment on September 7.
