Background
The son of musician Bruce Guthro, Dylan released his debut album, All That’s True, in 2012. Dylan Guthro was exposed to music since birth as the son of Cape Breton singer/songwriter Bruce Guthro. He began playing guitar at age four, and performing on stage with his father at age six.
Career
In 2015, Guthro teamed up with fellow Halifax singer-songwriters Carleton Stone and Breagh Mackinnon to form the band Portuguese Cities. While initially as a teenager most interested in heavy metal and hip hop, he found himself inspired to go in the singer/songwriter direction by a performance he saw of Martin Sexton at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso, Nova Scotia. By age 15, he was playing his songs with friends, but didn"t have the confidence to perform in public for a few more years.
While on tour with his father, Guthro played some demos he had recorded of his own material to musician Dave Gunning, who was also playing in Bruce Guthro"s band.
Gunning was eager to help transform the demos into a full-fledged album. What eventually became All That"s True was recorded and mixed over a number of different sessions during the course of six months.
Bruce Guthro co-wrote five of the album"s songs, and it was not the first time they had collaborated. Dylan had co-written four on Bruce"s previous release, Number Final Destination.
All That’s True was released in 2012.
The album was co-produced by Gunning and Bruce Guthro. Guthro has toured extensively in Canada, as well as Europe. Guthro"s 2014 release, “Do lieutenant All Again,” was written with singer/songwriter David Myles, and produced by rapper Classified.
Also in 2014, Guthro made his producing debut, when he co-produced singer/songwriter Dave Sampson"s debut album, "Number Pressure Number Diamonds."
In 2015, Guthro and fellow singer-songwriters Carleton Stone and Breagh Mackinnon united to form the band Portuguese Cities.
The band describes their music as "rootsy popular" and features both twoand three-part harmony. They originally met at the Gordie Sampson Songcamp in Cape Breton early in the 2010s, and have been playing together as a threesome for a few years before officially becoming a band.
The band has been in the recording studio in both Cape Breton and Nashville with Gordie Sampson and anticipate an album release in early 2016. 2015 - United States of America Songwriting Competition Finalist (RnB Category) - "Do lieutenant All Again".
