When the Hamilton Wildcats merged with the Hamilton Tigers in 1950, Valiquette, along with teammate Jack Stewart, were signed by the Edmonton Eskimos, a move that was met with resistance and threats for legal action from the Hamilton club, as they had presumed they had rights to him. The Canadian Rugby Union later made a ruling that Edmonton held his rights, and Valiquette decided to join the Eskimos. Valiquette was traded back to Hamilton the next season by Edmonton in exchange for George Festeryga.
