(On June 24, 1497, Italian navigator Giovanni Caboto bette...)
On June 24, 1497, Italian navigator Giovanni Caboto better known as John Cabot became the first European of his day to record an official landing on the North American continent. Funded by British merchants and sailing under the English flag, Cabot claimed his discovery of the New founde land for England. His claim cleared the way for future English settlements in the New World. On his return voyage to Bristol, England, Cabot sailed his tiny ship Matthew through rich fishing grounds off the Newfoundland coast now known as the Grand Banks. His crew hauled in huge quantities of cod simply by lowering weighted baskets into the sea. This find led directly to the great rise of the Newfoundland cod fishery. Born around 1450, probably in Genoa, Italy, John Cabot lived at about the same time as Christopher Columbus. Like Columbus, Cabot sailed west to find a new route to China and Japan. He found the American continent instead.

(Few people recall the name of Eirik Thorvaldsson, who beg...)
Few people recall the name of Eirik Thorvaldsson, who began life in Jaederen, Norway, around 950. When he was nine years old, his father killed a man or maybe two and was forced to flee with his family to Iceland. Young Eirik grew up in the harsh environs of that wind-swept isle in the North Atlantic. Harsh lands breed harsh men, and Eirik fit the mold. Like his father before him, he battled with neighbors and killed several men in blood feuds. Banished from Iceland for three years, he sailed west to seek refuge in an unexplored land. After three years in exile, Eirik returned to Iceland with tales of his discoveries in that new land to the west. He called it Greenland to entice others to join him there. Around 985, he sailed west again from Iceland with twenty-five ships of colonists. History records him as the founder of the first European settlement in Greenland and the father of Leif Eriksson. People remember him best as Erik the Red.

(Acclaimed as the most beautiful woman of her time, Eleano...)
Acclaimed as the most beautiful woman of her time, Eleanor of Aquitaine (c.1122 1204) uniquely shaped 12th-century Europe. As the wife of two kings and the mother of three others, her beauty, grace, style, and intellect captivated a continent. At a time when men regarded women as little more than personal property to be owned and exploited, Eleanor threw off the shackles of male dominance and scribed an indelible mark on the history of France and England. As France s queen, Eleanor accompanied Louis VII on the Second Crusade to the Holy Land and championed a burgeoning feminist movement. After divorcing Louis, she married Henry II of England. Her marriage to Henry upset the balance of power in Europe and led to 300 years of warfare before its restoration. Perhaps best remembered as a symbol of courtly love, Eleanor of Aquitaine also continues to personify the proud image of emancipated womanhood.

(The U.S. Navy ruled the waves in the 20th century. It met...)
The U.S. Navy ruled the waves in the 20th century. It met the challenge of World War II and emerged as the greatest navy in the world. And it has worked hard ever since to maintain its mastery of the seas. No navy on earth is its equal or even comes close. It owes its continued dominance, in part, to its submarines and the submariners who man them. About the start of the 21st century, however, both China and Russia expanded their submarine production. They now pose a threat to the U.S. Navys undersea superiority. Today, the Navy stands ready to meet any new undersea challenges from potential adversaries. A new underwater strike force has joined the fleetthe Virginia-class new attack submarines. They are designed to keep the Navys edge in undersea warfighting. Each boatas submariners call themrepresents engineering and technology elevated to the threshold of perfection. Adversaries beware!

Since the last flight of the Space Shuttle in 2011, Americas manned space program has been put on hold. NASA has been forced to rely on Russian and commercial spacecraft to ferry personnel and supplies to the International Space Station. But NASA scientists and engineers, and their colleagues in the spaceflight community, are working hard to return America to its former dominance in space via the Orion program. Orion, Americas next-generation spacecraft, is a Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle. It is designed to carry 2 to 6 crew members into deep space. Similar to the Apollo capsule in appearance, but larger and much more advanced, it has already successfully completed its first unmanned test flight. In 2018, Orion will lift into space on a massive new rocket, especially designed for it, for the first time. The event, designated Exploration Mission 1, will mark the first of many steps along Americas path to the planet Marsand beyond.

(The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China is the...)
The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world. Chinas revered leader Sun Yat-sen conceived of it in 1919. Plans for its design and construction spanned several generations. Over the years, it suffered many delays and setbacks. It finally became a reality almost a century later. The massive structurea true engineering marvelbecame fully operational in July 2012. Since its inception, the huge dam has attracted great praise and equally great criticism. Its supporters point to its benefits, mainly flood control, power production, and improved navigation on the river. Detractors of the dam voice concerns over its negative effects on the ecology and environment. Both sides back their positions with convincing arguments. Only time will tell whether the dams benefits will outweigh its liabilities. In either case, the Three Gorges Dam stands tall on the river.
