Began at 17 with Thomas E. Newell Company, 5 and 10 cent business, Boston. Associated with S. H. Knox of Buffalo, New York, 1889, in same line of business, locating first store at Fall River, Massachusetts. Separated from partner, 1895, dividing stores, and organized the E. P. Charlton Company.
Pioneer in opening 5 and 10 cent stores west of the Rocky Mountains and in Canada. One of the founders of F. W. Woolworth Company, 1912, at which time was operating 54 stores. Built Charlton Mills, Fall River, 1909.
