Earnest Edward Lacey was born on March 31, 1939, in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. He is the son of Carnegie and Bernice Earnestine (Lewis) Lacey.
Lacey graduated from John Marshall High School and from Loop College with an associate's degree in 1974. He also graduated from Chicago State University with a bachelor's degree in 1975 and received his master's degree from Governors State University the next year.
Lacey started his career as an accountant at F.M.C. Corp. in Chicago in 1973. The next year he became a commercial bank officer at Union National Bank and in 1977, he started working as an office manager and accountant at his own company Metro Accountants and Consultants in Chicago. During that time, he also joined the faculties of Prairie State College and Olive-Harvey College, where he worked as an instructor. He also taught at Robert Morris College from 1984 to 1987 and at LeMoyne Owen College from 1988 to 1991.
Since 1988, Lacey worked as a regional director of Tennessee Small Business Development Center at the University of Memphis. In 1992, he became a host of Small Business Review and Ancestors for local cable television programs.
Currently, Lacey works as an author, publisher, genealogist, curator at self-employed.
During his career, he also served in the U.S. Army during the period from 1962 to 1964.
Lacey married Clara Elaine Briscoe on July 30, 1962. The couple has 2 children: Kimberly V. and Nicole C. Lacey.
