Bayelsa, being a new state, is in need of self- definition and understanding, not least to promote greater tolerance within and between communities. Thirty-six scholars, largely Nigerian, have contributed to the study, which is divided into seven parts: the enviroment, the people, culture, history, politics, economy and social services.

Ebiegberi Alagoa was born on April 14, 1933 in Okpoma, Rivers State, Nigeria, into the family of Joseph Ayibatonye and Jane Furombogha (Obasi) Alagoa.
Ebiegberi Joe Alagoa received Bachelor of Arts (with honors) at the University College in Ibadan, Nigeria. Then he earned Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Wisconsin in 1966.
Ebiegberi Joe Alagoa started his career as an archivist at National Archives in 1959 and worked there for 3 years. Then he became a lecturer in African history at the University of Lagos in 1965 - 1967. In 1967 he became a senior research fellow at the Institute of African Studies at University of Ibadan. He took that post until 1972. He was also a chair of Rivers State Council of Arts and Culture and a dean of School of Humanities at the University of Port Harcourt.
A Nigerian historian and educator, Ebiegberi Joe Alagoa has written numerous works about his homeland, the Rivers State region of Nigeria. Many of those works deal with history and folklore as incorporated into the oral tradition of Africa. In his 1964 work "The Small Brave City-State: A History of Nembe-Brass in Niger Delta", Alagoa chronicles the history of the Nembe people who have lived near the Brass River estuary of the Niger Delta since the fifteenth century. Drawing on oral sources preserved in the national archives, as well as other published sources, Alagoa describes the social and political organizations, commerce, and politics of the Nembe Brass. He also describes the Akassa War between the Nembe and the British colonial trading company.
For young readers, Alagoa has contributed several volumes to London publisher Heinemann’s “African Historical Biographies” series. The goal of this series is to present African history from a native point of view, rather than from the colonial perspective so frequently employed. Thus, "King Boy of Brass" tells the story of a nineteenth-century boy-king of the Niger Delta who is at first a disappointment to his father, but redeems himself as a ruler and trader.
