His previous positions include governor of the Central Bank of Iran and secretary general under the late Mohsen Nourbakhsh. He also served as the chairman of the money and cr council, the stock exchange council and the banks supreme council of Iran. He received his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts in economics from Indiana University Bloomington, United States of America and his post-graduate diploma in Statistics and National Accounting from the International Institute of Social Studies, The Hague, Netherlands.
Prior to that, he earned his Master of Arts and Bachelor in economics from University of Tehran.
He has three children: Iman, Ershad, and Nazanin.
Besides his executive positions, he has been a faculty member of the economics department at Tehran University since 1991.
