In 1876 he was sent to Japan by the Canadian Methodist Church which was affiliated with the Japanese Methodist Church together with G.M. Meacham and landed at Yokohama. The following years was invited to preach in Yamanashi Prefecture. Created a sensation when he made a speech at the Meiji Hall, Tokyo, by defending Christianity against atheism and materialism which was then prevalent among the students at Tokyo University (1883).
Eby Charles S. built the Central Church in Hongo, Tokyo for the benefit of young people in 1891. Then he returned home to collect more funds for his work in Japan but fell ill and died without returning.
