Edgar Albert Guest was born on August 20, 1881 in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. He was the son of Edwin and Julia (Wayne) Guest. In 1891 family immigrated to United States. He had two brothers.
Edgar Albert Guest attended grammar and high schools in Detroit, Michigan. His father died when the poet was seventeen, and Guest was forced to drop out of high school.
In 1895 Edgar Albert Guest was hired as a copy boy for the Detroit Free Press, where he would work for almost sixty-five years. He worked his way up from a copy boy to a job in the news department. His first poem appeared on December 11, 1898. In time he became a police reporter and exchange editor, and in 1904 began contributing poems to the paper under the heading "Chaff". These columns evolved into the immensely popular daily feature "Breakfast Table Chat", which, at the height of its popularity, was syndicated in about three hundred newspapers nationwide and made its author’s name a household word.
In 1916 Guest’s collection A Heap o’ Livin’ was published, selling more than one million copies. Similar collections of sentimental, humorous, and uplifting verses such as Just Folks (1917), Rhythms of Childhood (1924), Life's Highway (1933), and Living the Years (1949) were also very popular.
From 1931 to 1942, Guest broadcast a weekly program on NBC radio. In 1951, "A Guest in Your Home" appeared on NBC TV. He offered a sentimental view of life in his poetry, spread normally over 14 lines and became a favorite with the American public. He died on August 5, 1959 in Detroit, Michigan, United States.

Quotations:
"You are the person who has to decide. Whether you'll do it or toss it aside; You are the person who makes up your mind. Whether you'll lead or will linger behind. Whether you'll try for the goal that's afar. Or just be contented to stay where you are."
"If you never take a chance, you will never be defeated - but you will never accomplish anything either."
"Life is like a cocktail, made up for the most part of sweet things, and tinged with a dash of bitters. We must drain it to the dregs to get at the cherry, just as we must live a full and rounded life to know all its pleasures."
Edgar Albert Guest was a Mason and a lifetime member of Ashlar Lodge No. 91.
On June 28, 1906 Edgar Guest married Nellie Crossman. They had three children and a foster-daughter, Marjorie Ellen Meagher.
