From early childhood displayed more taste for the intellectual side of life than for the social. At the age of five she was taken to the Crystal Palace by her parents to put together puzzles purposely cut by an expert, which she did in a given time in the presence of numerous spectators. Her taste for chess developed when she was very young, inheriting it from her parents, who are known chess-players.
She has composed and published upwards of a thousand problems, and with them has won many prizes. Invented and introduced the Twentieth Century Retractor, 1902.
