According to his obituary, in 1905 entered the newspaper business as a secretary to Arthur Capper, owner of the Topeka Daily Capital, who went on to be governor of Kansas and a U.S. Senator for many years. He soon moved into the news department of the newspaper.
He became Managing Editor of the Salina (KS) Journal in1908. He returned to the Capital and became City Editor in 1915. During 1916-17 he was on the telegraph desk of the Souix City Tribune. From 1917 until 1920 he was at the city desk of the Kansas City Star. From 1920 until 1928 he was associate editor of the Weekly Kansas City Star. He then moved to the Topeka State Journal where he was editorial writer and columnist. His popular daily writings were headed "Chips by Chap". He continued writing it after his retirement until his death in 1954.
