Heelan, Edmond was born on February 5, 1868 in Elton, County Limerick, Ireland. Son of John D. and Anne (Quish) Heelan.

Studied in private Schools. Graduate in philosophy and theology, All Hallows College, Dublin, 1890.

Career

Ordained priest at Dublin, Ireland, 1890. Came to the United States, 1890, naturalized citizen, 1895. Assistant pastor St. Raphael’s Cathedral, Dubuque, Iowa, 1890-1893, rector, 1893-1897.

Pastor Sacred Heart Church, Fort Dodge, Iowa, 1897-1919. Appointed auxiliary bishop of Sioux City, December 21, 1918. Consecrated bishop, April 8, 1919.

Rector Epiphany Cathedral. Sioux City, 1919-1920. Appointed bishop of Sioux City, March 8, 1920.

Appointed assistant at the Pontifical Throne and Count of the Apostolic Palace, October 10, 1941.
