Career
He held the Forbes Chair of Organic Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh and was head of department there from 1959 to 1968. He was also President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh between 1959-1964. He assisted Norman Haworth in 1934 when he became the first to synthesize Vitamin C.
