Studied at Cheltenham Grammar School and Royal School of Mines. Doctor of Science London. Doctor of Laws Glasgow.
Career
Became Assistant to the late Doctor John Stenhouse, Fellow of the Royal Society, 1861. Chemical Tutor at Glasgow University, 1862-1865. Appointed Professor of Technical Chemistry, Glasgow, 1875.
Publicoiions: many original memoirs and essays on Chemistry. Amongst them — Destructive Distillation, 1877 (4th ed.). Fuel and its Applications, 1889.
My Only Child (poems), 1895. The Secret of Petrarch, 1904. Honourable Emeritus Professor of Technical Chemistry at Glasgow Technical College.
